Cupping & Hijama Therapy

Cupping and hijama therapy performed by a doctor under sterile conditions.

Rid Your Body of Accumulated Toxins, Strengthen Your Immunity and Find a Natural Solution for Chronic Pain!

The stress of modern life, air pollution, processed foods and a sedentary (inactive) lifestyle lead to heavy metals and toxic substances building up in our bodies and in the fluids between our tissues. Over time, this build-up shows itself as chronic fatigue, muscle pain, headaches and a weakened immune system.

The Cupping and Hijama (Wet Cupping) Therapy we offer at the Ministry of Health-certified Dr. Ahmet Demir Clinic is a holistic detox and treatment protocol that combines thousands of years of traditional medical knowledge with modern medical hygiene, sterilisation and a doctor's anatomical expertise.

What Are Cupping and Hijama (Cupping Therapy), and How Do They Work?

Cupping is a traditional medical practice based on applying suction to the skin; it increases microcirculation (blood flow in the capillaries) and activates the body's own healing mechanisms. It is applied using two main methods:

  • Dry Cupping: A procedure in which suction is applied using special cups only, without any incision in the skin, to increase blood circulation, release muscle spasms and speed up lymphatic flow.
  • Hijama (Wet Cupping): Following dry cupping, extremely superficial and fine micro-scratches are made on the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis), and the toxic, clotted and stagnant fluid that has accumulated between the tissues is drawn out by suction.

Which Conditions Are Hijama and Cupping Used For, and Who Can Benefit?

Cupping is applied not only when you are unwell, but also to protect against illness (preventive medicine) and to increase the body's resilience.

Main Areas of Use:

  • Chronic Pain and Muscle Spasms: Back, neck and lower-back pain, fibromyalgia and muscle stiffness.
  • Headaches and Migraines: Migraines and tension-type headaches related to poor circulation or stress.
  • Chronic Fatigue and Low Energy: Raising energy levels by clearing the toxic load accumulated in the body.
  • Strengthening the Immune System: Supporting cellular immunity in people who fall ill frequently.
  • Circulatory and Lymphatic System Disorders: Regulating blood circulation and speeding up the clearance of oedema.

How Is the Procedure Performed? What Does the Process Involve?

At Dr. Ahmet Demir Clinic, cupping and hijama are carried out under fully sterile, doctor-led conditions:

  1. Medical Examination and Identifying Acupuncture/Hijama Points: The treatment areas (usually the back, the back of the head or painful areas) are determined according to the patient's complaints and traditional meridian/trigger points.
  2. Dry Suction (First Stage): Single-use sterile cups are applied to the area for 3–5 minutes to draw the toxic blood to the surface.
  3. Micro-Scratches and Wet Cupping (Hijama): After the cups are removed, tiny micro-scratches that leave no marks are made on the most superficial layer of the skin with the tip of a sterile scalpel. The cups are reapplied and the toxic fluid is collected by suction.
  4. Dressing and Completion: At the end of the procedure, the area is cleaned with medical antiseptics and covered with St John's wort oil or a suitable sterile dressing.

Duration: Preparation and treatment take approximately 20 to 30 minutes in total.

What Do We Do? Why Choose Us? (The Dr. Ahmet Demir Clinic Approach)

When hijama is performed by people without medical training in unlicensed back-street conditions, it carries the risk of infection, deep scarring and injury to blood vessels and nerves.

  • Ministry of Health-Approved GETAT Expertise: At our clinic, hijama is performed directly by a doctor certified in GETAT (Traditional & Complementary Medicine) and approved by the Turkish Ministry of Health.
  • 100% Sterility and Single-Use Materials: All cups, scalpels and consumables used are for individual use only and are disposed of as medical waste after the procedure.
  • Precise, Scar-Free Incisions: Deep and incorrect incisions lead to permanent scars. Thanks to our doctor's precision with micro-incisions, no permanent marks are left on your skin.
  • Integrating Acupuncture and Anatomical Knowledge: The points where the cups are placed are not chosen at random, but in line with traditional acupuncture meridians and modern anatomical knowledge.

Before and After the Procedure: What to Keep in Mind

Preparing for Hijama

  • At least 24 hours before the procedure, reduce your intake of animal products (meat, milk, yoghurt, eggs, etc.) or switch to a light diet.
  • On the day of the procedure, do not come either overly full or completely hungry; arrive 2-3 hours after a light meal.
  • Patients taking blood-thinning medication should inform our doctor during the examination.

Recovery and Aftercare Following Hijama

  • For the first 24 hours after the procedure, keep the treated area away from water and do not shower.
  • For the first 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, Turkish baths (hammam) and heavy consumption of animal products.
  • The areas with micro-scratches scab over completely and heal without leaving a mark within 2-3 days.

Frequently asked questions

Are Hijama and Cupping Painful?

No. Because the micro-scratches are made only on the outermost layer of the skin, there is no deep pain. During suction you feel only a mild, pleasant ache; it is a very comfortable procedure.

Will Hijama Leave Any Marks or Spots?

When hijama is performed by a doctor in a sterile environment with superficial micro-incisions, it leaves no permanent marks or scars whatsoever.

How Often Should Hijama Be Done?

For preventive and detox purposes, it is recommended at the change of seasons (2–4 times a year). For the treatment of chronic pain or a specific condition, a course of 3 sessions at 1-month intervals may be planned under a doctor's supervision.

Who Should Not Have Hijama?

Hijama is not performed on people with severe anaemia, active organ failure or a clotting disorder (haemophilia), or on women in the early months of pregnancy.

Cupping & Hijama Therapy Prices 2026 – Istanbul: What Determines the Cost?

The price of hijama and cupping therapy is determined by the number of cups to be applied, the size of the treatment area (back only, or including the head/legs?) and any additional GETAT (Traditional & Complementary Medicine) protocols combined with it.
