Hair Transplantation

Female Hair Transplant

Hair transplantation in women should be planned differently from male hair transplantation. Two of the most important questions are why the hair is thinning and whether the procedure can be carried out without shaving the entire scalp.

In appropriately selected women, transplantation may be considered for the frontal hairline, temples, a naturally high forehead, localised thinning and selected scar or trauma areas. In our clinic, unshaven DHI is by far the technique we most commonly prefer for female hair transplantation.

Why Is Female Hair Transplantation Different?

Hair loss in women can be more diffuse and may also involve the donor area. For this reason, suitability cannot be judged simply by looking at the visible thinning area.

Is Every Type of Female Hair Loss Suitable for Transplantation?

No. Diffuse shedding, hormonal causes, thyroid disease, iron deficiency and active scalp or dermatological conditions should be assessed before surgery is planned.

When May Hair Transplantation Be More Suitable for Women?

  • A genetically high forehead
  • Frontal hairline recession
  • Temple recession
  • Localised hair loss
  • Older scar or trauma areas

Unshaven Hair Transplant for Women

For most women, shaving the entire scalp is unnecessary and understandably undesirable. In many patients, the recipient area can be left unshaven while only a limited donor strip is shortened and concealed beneath longer hair.

Which Technique Do We Prefer for Unshaven Female Hair Transplantation?

DHI. For women who want an unshaven transplant, DHI is clearly our preferred technique. It allows controlled placement between existing long hairs and usually avoids shaving the recipient area. Sapphire FUE can be considered in selected cases but is much less commonly used for genuinely unshaven female procedures.

Why Can DHI Be Advantageous for Women?

  • Implantation between existing hairs
  • Reduced need for shaving
  • Controlled work around the hairline
  • Less obvious change in everyday appearance

When Might Sapphire FUE Be Considered in Women?

It may be considered in selected patients when the recipient area is completely bald, a larger area is being treated or a high graft number is required.

Female Hairline Design

A female hairline is often softer and more rounded than a male hairline. Forehead height, temple shape, facial width and natural growth direction should all be considered.

Forehead Reduction with Hair Transplantation

Traction-type hair loss can occur in women who regularly wear tight ponytails or similar hairstyles. In women with a naturally high forehead, a newly designed hairline can also be used to reduce the apparent forehead height.

Temple Hair Transplantation

Temple hairs emerge at very acute, almost horizontal angles, so precise control of direction and angle is particularly important.

The Donor Area in Women

Donor density, hair-shaft thickness and the presence or absence of diffuse miniaturisation should be assessed carefully.

How Many Grafts Are Needed?

The number varies according to the hairline, temples, thinning area and donor capacity.

How Long Does a Female Hair Transplant Take?

The procedure generally takes around 6–8 hours. Unshaven DHI can take longer because grafts are placed carefully between long existing hairs.

Appearance After Female Hair Transplantation

Long hair can help conceal the treated area. Mild redness, small crusts and some swelling may still be visible during the first few days.

Shock Loss and Growth Timeline

Temporary shedding may occur during the first 1–2 months. New growth usually begins during months 2–4, visible development increases around months 4–6, and a substantial part of the result is generally seen by months 9–12.

Medical Treatment

If a treatable cause of hair loss is identified, medical treatment may be required before or after transplantation.
